Palm Springs has built a reputation for itself as an oasis in the middle of the desert. Art galleries, museums, renowned restaurants, and carefully curated boutiques pepper the town, indicating that it is one in which creativity thrives. The art scene mirrors the uniqueness of the city, with Palm Springs modernism being a core theme. The city celebrates modernism with enthusiasm and has dedicated a week in February to fostering its preservation and growth and a weekend in October for a Fall Preview of the event.
About Modernism Week and Fall Preview
Modernism Week was sparked by the major success of the annual symposium put on by the Palm Springs Art Museum’s Architecture and Design Council. In 2006, the first official Palm Springs Modernism Week was heavily attended and greeted with spirited support. Originally created to showcase Palm Springs’ mid-century modern architecture, Palm Springs Modernism Week has since expanded to include different facets of modernism, including fashion, decor, culture, and art.
During Modernism Week in February, the celebration of Modernism takes place in the form of tours, lectures, shows, sales, films, parties, and exhibitions. As a charitable non-profit, Modernism Week gives a portion of the proceeds to organizations dedicated to preservation, as well as scholarships for local students interested in pursuing a degree in architecture or design.
The entire event is designed with modern living in mind and the Fall Preview in October is no exception. Known as “Mini Modernism Week”, this October weekend will be packed with a sampling of the most popular events of Modernism Week in February. A well-balanced mix of recreation and information will yield a lively four days that will cultivate appreciation for Modernism.
